The vehicles produced by Isuzu are known for being exceptionally reliable and durable. Long-lasting vehicles are the hallmark of this Japanese car manufacturer.
The MU-X is their flagship mid-sized SUV – and you may not be surprised to hear that I have difficulty criticizing it. It is important to keep in mind, though, that despite this vehicle’s reputation, there are some common issues. Isuzu MUX owners often experience these issues:
Isuzu MUX Common Problems
1. Thin Paintwork:
It’s pretty common to find thin, soft paint on these vehicles, especially on the 2014-2018 model years, both from my personal experience and what other owners are reporting.
There’s a thin coating of paint on the Isuzu MUX, which makes it easy to scratch.
Taking care of your vehicle and washing it on a regular basis (as well as using a UV-blocking wax) won’t cause problems.
You’ll make your paint look dull and chipped if you don’t do this maintenance.
2. Noisy Wheel Hub Seals:
It is common for these vehicle hub seals to become dusty and lose their lubrication over time, which can lead to loud noises when driving between 60 and 100 km/h.
By lubricating the seals every now and then, you can easily fix this minor issue.
3. Average Infotainment System:
Another thing most people don’t like about the Isuzu MU-X is the outdated infotainment system. In comparison with some other car brands, it certainly stands out. However, it can always be improved.
4. Cold engine turbo noise:
Most owners complain about loud turbo noise when the engine is cold, when accelerating, or while driving uphill on these vehicles, despite the fact that the standard turbo on these vehicles is reliable and can last for a long time.
ISUZU has also revised the standard turbo to make it more reliable because it is known to go out on some MUX cars with time.
MUX and D-MAX turbochargers are covered under Isuzu’s warranty since this is a common issue. Essentially, if the turbocharger fails, it will be replaced free of charge under warranty.
5. Speaker Rattle:
In addition to the speaker rattle when driving over bumpy road or speed bumps, the MUX is also susceptible to other issues. After a few years of driving the Isuzu MUX, the speakers are known for rattling, which is not uncommon.
6. Body Mounts Cracking:
Body mounts keep the vehicle frame and body connected, and some owners reported they cracked on their Isuzu Mux.
In addition to cracking over time, MUX’s are prone to breaking when driving on uneven roads or offroad. A crack may appear over time when these are exposed to the elements.
7. Head Unit Malfunction:
There has been a history of malfunctions with the head unit, especially in the early years of production. Displays can be blank, cut out while driving, or continuously restart themselves over and over again while this occurs.

What is the reliability of the Isuzu MUX?
The reliability of vehicles is something I often consider as a professional mechanic.
You can expect some issues here and there with the Isuzu Mux, but they are usually minor. There are no problems associated with the engines until the mileage reaches 250 000 – 350 000 kilometers.
It will run for years without any problems as long as it is maintained properly. There is also a great deal of ease of finding parts for the Isuzu MUX, which I always find to be a great benefit!
