VW Coolant Warning Light: What Does It Mean?
It usually indicates low coolant levels in the reservoir when this light or symbol appears on your Volkswagen.
There are, however, several other possible causes (see below). Sensors send info to Powertrain Control Modules (PCMs), which alert you to potential problems.

Coolant warning lights on Volkswagens are usually caused by a few common problems. The five most common ones are as follows:
1. Insufficient coolant flow:
Coolant reservoirs with low fluid levels are the most likely culprits. You can see the plastic reservoir under the hood on the passenger side of the engine compartment if you open the hood.
Check the engine fluid level when the engine is cold. Make sure it is between the “Min” and “Max” lines. Warm engines may have higher levels.
A 50/50 mixture of coolant and distilled water should be used to fill the reservoir if it is low. In time, rust and scale can build up inside your cooling system due to diluted anticorrosion additives.
Note: If the engine is hot, do not remove the radiator cap or reservoir cap. There is a risk of severe burns from steam and fluid.
2. Leak in Coolant:
There is likely a leak somewhere in your system if you need to top off your coolant regularly. Wetness, cracks, or tight hose clamps should be visually examined on all radiator and heater hoses.
In addition, make sure there are no leaks at the gasket seals and the water pump. Minor leaks can be fixed cheaply if caught early. Overheating damage can cost $2,500 or more if you ignore a leak.
3. Defective coolant sensor:
Whenever the coolant level drops below a certain threshold, the warning light on VWs is triggered by a coolant level sensor.
Faulty sensors may cause the reservoir to appear full. Restore proper monitoring by replacing it. A failing sensor can also cause intermittent coolant lights.
4. A closed thermostat:
Coolant flows through a thermostat when the engine warms up due to a heat-activated gate valve. Even with full fluid levels, the radiator can overheat rapidly if the coolant is stuck shut.
The gauge needle may be stuck, the heater output may be poor, and temperatures may spike at idle. It is possible to resolve this failure by replacing the thermostat.
5. Cooling system air pockets:
The symptoms of low fluid may mimic the symptoms of air trapped inside the cooling system.
In most cases, this results from not properly bleed the system after a DIY coolant flush. Purging the engine block and heater core with professional flushing equipment is more effective.
It is not recommended for DIYers to attempt radiator bleeding without temporarily removing the radiator cap.
